About Nulato
How do you get to Nulato?
Nulato is along the Yukon river and there are no connecting roads. The airport is vital for travel, mail, and medical emergencies. It is a 2 hour flight from Fairbanks. If you fly commercially with Ravn or Wrights Air, a round trip ticket for one person is about 490 dollars.
How big is Nulato?
There are about 250 people. For more info you can view the Nulato page on Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nulato,_Alaska
What does breakup mean?
A phrase we use all the time in the spring is “breakup.” This refers specifically to the process of the river ice breaking as it melts and flows out towards the ocean. It is an awkward travel season where the trails are no longer safe for snow machine/snow mobile and the river is not yet passable for boats. As a result there is a time where air travel is the only option if you need to go anywhere.
It also is a fantastic yearly illustration of what God does in hearts. Melting a cold heart and breaking it so that it becomes soft and moldable for His glory.
What is summer like?
Summers usually get between 80-90F, with about 20 hours daylight. All this heat and sunshine makes for a lot of forest fires and smoke. Right now in Fairbanks, (July 2019) we are experiencing the smoke side of things. It reminds me of the 2015 fire that surrounded Nulato. Please pray for the communities threatened by fire this year.
